This is my mind
not on drugs (Dream Diary #1)
I debated writing about this for many reasons, but mostly because it is a window into my psyche.
As all dreams are.
It’s going to get a little weird, and you might question my sanity, but it will be entertaining. I also find it interesting that I need to preface it with this. Here we are going on this really strange Labryinth-esque journey…
…are you cool enough to vibe with it?
The real question, I guess, is, am I cool enough to?
I will also state that I have a hyperactive imagination (I mean, I’m a writer), but more than the average goose. Both my conscious and subconscious tend to run away daily in a maladaptive manner. Sometimes I am even surprised by the utter strangeness and complexity my mind creates. I would also like to state I do not imbibe anything hallucinatory for clarification.
This is my mind, not on drugs.
This particular dream I had some weeks ago, and I shared it with a friend who told me I absolutely must write this in a post.
So here goes…
The dream opens, and I am standing within a house that I share with my sister. I know instantly from the way this house is oriented that it is a Victorian home. I am climbing the stairs towards the attic and giving a tour to a prospective tenant.
The attic itself is finished off in this room; however, the ceilings are tilted, and there are hidden eaves. The woman I am showing the house to gives Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde vibes. She has long, French manicured nails and is dressed in an entirely pink tracksuit with oversized sunglasses, circa 2002 Paris Hilton. She is chewing her gum and exclaims, “This is absolutely what I need.”
I come to find out she is a jewelry designer who sells her earrings and bracelets online. They are all dipped in glitter and feathers and are actually pretty fantastic.
She exclaims she loves the room and will take it, but I have to explain to her that there is one caveat. One very big caveat.
You see, the attic is haunted.
And not the normal ghost haunting.
Behind the eaves lives a ghost that absolutely hates people and has run off many of our other tenants. There is a small sliding door entrance to these eaves, and I tell her she must never open these doors.
I also share that if she wants to get on the ghosts’ good side, she has to give them snacks and DVD’s regularly (same).
Because the ghost living in the eaves looks exactly like Samara from The Ring.
Now…
If any of you remember this character, you will recall that her particular route of transportation was through a television.
Hence the DVDs.
In my dream, she loves that shit.
Absolutely hates people but will binge-watch an entire season of Murder She Wrote in a night. Also, her favorite snacks are gummies and buttered movie popcorn, which is entirely appropriate.
The woman decided to rent our attic and follow our conditions.
After what equates to a few weeks in dream time, I return to the attic to find Legally Blonde girl selling her jewelry. Samara-ghost is QVC producer-style operating the camera from behind the scenes. They have formed an undeniable bond over the miracle of televised streaming.
Our ghost stands in her nightgown, moving the camera and zooming in back and forth on the jewelry while Blondie hawks her feathered earrings like a pro. They also apparently watch copious amounts of romcoms together and are fanatics for a good love story.
Now, after another few months of this in dream time our tenant has to move.
Through reasons that are not explained by my subconscious.
She writes our ghost a long letter, which I shove under the door; it has her address written on it, and she tells her she is welcome to climb through the TV and visit.
I give this letter to her with a large bag of gummy worms in compensation for her sadness as her dead fingers slip through the door crack.
I get the general idea that she would go to war for Blondie, and I appreciate the tenacity of their friendship. Blondie calls me later and says her business has never been better, and I somehow know it is because Samara-ghost is climbing through TVs to scare prospective customers into buying merch.
As a best friend should.
Also, there is a sasquatch man who is our semi-regular chef who lives in the forest around our home. He provides us with nutritious meals, and we provide him with trees not being axed by big oil.
It’s a win-win all around.
Now obviously I had to psychologically analyze this because how could I not?
From my very uncertified perspective, I think both characters represent me, as the subconscious tends to do. I am the girl comfortable in front of the camera who has the ‘right’ personality, and I am also the girl who just wants to be a hermit with my wet hair and eat gummy worms while snarling at anyone who comes to my door.
I am also the sasquatch who just wants nourishment from the forest.
Psychologically and thematically, my dreams are a gold mine. I hoped you enjoyed this foray into my subconscious.
And if you didn’t, I don’t care, I have a murder mystery to watch.
growls.
